The development of the tram in Volgograd was carried out more actively than in other cities. At the beginning of the 20th century, Tsaritsyn became the first county town where a tram appeared. And after more than half a century, the only high-speed tram appeared in Volgograd. The idea of creating a hybrid of the metro and an ordinary ground tram was put forward in the early 70s by Georgy Kurin, the ex-deputy chairman of the city executive committee of Volgograd. Given the length of Volgograd along the Volga, the creation of a high-speed underground tram solved the transport problem: the metro was relied only on cities with a population of at least a million people (the population of Volgograd in those years was 800,000).
